The diocese of Burgos built the altarpiece museum with the aim of preserving and restoring the heritage from the abandoned churches or those in the process of ruin. The chosen space was the church of San Esteban, one of the oldest parishes in Burgos. Its existence dates back to 1163. This church features a polychrome façade and Elizabethan Gothic style choir, the work of Simón de Colonia.
