Church of San Lorenzo

Located in the street of the same name; the church of San Lorenzo is one of the best examples of Baroque style in the city. At the end of the 17th century it was built by architects Bernabé de Hazas and Francisco del Porton for the school of El Salvador, which belonged to the Society of Jesus.

In 1601, Francisca San Vitores de la Portilla arranged in her will, to economically support the building of the main chapel and to be buried in this building. The first building was disliked for its simplicity and modest size, so the patrons pressured the Jesuits to rebuilt it. Finally, in 1694 the octagon shaped church was completed. After the expulsion of the Society of Jesus it was turned into a parish.

It stands out because of its main Baroque facade, where we can see the image of San Lorenzo with his iconic gridiron. On the inside its dome, main altarpiece and the sepulchre of its benefactor Francisca San Vitores stand out.
