The Carthusian Monastery of Santa María de Miraflores is located in the park of Fuentes Blancas, 4km away from Burgos city centre. Surrounded by a dense forest, it was built as a hunting palace in the 15th century, and later became a Carthusian monastery by desire of King John II. In 1454, Queen Isabella of Castile renovated the building to transfer there the remains of her parents, John II and Isabella of Portugal, and her brother Prince Alfonso.

These sepulchres are one of the best examples of Gothic sculpture in Europe. Also, you can find the magnificent altarpiece that presides over the church, the work of Gil de Siloé. This is one of the most representative works of Hispanic Gothic sculpture, both for the originality of its composition and its iconography, quality of the sculpture and polychromy.

During your visit, you can also see a small exhibition with some of the most important art pieces of the monastery, including The Annunciation by Pedro Berruguete or The Elevation of the Cross by Joaquín Sorolla.

Did you know… It is said that the main altarpiece was coloured with the gold that was brought from the new world by Christopher Columbus.
